The Best City Breaks for Students

By ResidenceLifeAssistant 07 Apr 2024

City breaks for students are more popular than ever, and the UK is full of beautiful places to spend a night or two.

1. York: York, which is situated between London and Edinburgh, has undoubtedly earned a spot among the UK's top city getaway destinations. Moreover, York is one of the few cities that fully embodies England's past; its historic walls, buildings, and museums all highlight the nation's past. After reading about history, return to the present and discover amazing restaurants, a plethora of stores, and much more. York is a welcoming city that draws tourists with its charm and beauty in addition to its abundance of interesting (and occasionally a little gory) events and sights.

Activity ideas in York:

  • Explore York Minster on a tour which is one impressive cathedral: This place of worship has roots that go all the way back to the 7th century. The current building style was developed in the 13th and 15th centuries.

  • Explore the National Railway Museum: The National Railway Museum is a surefire hit with both young and old train enthusiasts. Situated in the centre of York, this free museum showcases more than 6000 exhibits linked to trains and more than 100 locomotives, spanning from an antique Rocket engine to a cutting-edge Japanese bullet train.

  • Clifford’s Tower: If you've visited York through Instagram, you've probably already seen Clifford's Tower. This final remnant of William the Conqueror's York Castle is a popular spot on social media and is well worth a visit.

2. Nottingham: If you're looking for a city getaway that blends history, excellent eating, and culture, Nottingham should be on your list. Though the city's association with Robin Hood helped establish its reputation, visitors are drawn back time and time again by the variety of activities available.

Activity ideas for Nottingham:

  • Visit Nottingham Castle to travel back in time: Trace the paths of rebels and myths as you learn about the 1000 years of local history. Take a trip beneath the surface to the old mediaeval castle's foundations and explore the Robin Hood Adventures offered by the castle.

  • Explore the City of Caves: The City of Caves appears just when you thought Nottingham could be any more awesome. There is a network of 500 sandstone caves hidden beneath the city. Take a fascinating trip to fully immerse yourself in the labyrinthine universe, exploring areas once inhabited by prehistoric people, WWII air raid shelters, and the remnants of a Victorian town.

3. Bath: Bath is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that boasts amazing Georgian architecture, historical artefacts around every corner, and an abbey that forms the core of the city's culture. Known for its natural hot springs, this quaint community nonetheless has a lot to offer modern activities to suit all tastes.

Activities to do in Bath:

  • Explore Bath Abbey: The Abbey, which is centrally located in Bath, is a major component of the city's culture because of its recognisable fan-vaulted ceiling. The Bath Abbey Tower Tour provides an intimate look at the inner workings of this iconic building. Climb 212 stairs through the numerous rooms to reach the summit of the tower's vaulted roof and clock face, where you'll be greeted with breathtaking vistas.

  • Float down the Canal: Glide around the Kennet and Avon Canal in style with The Lady Lena, the world's first electric river launch. For the return trip, you can be picked up from Bath Top Lock or Bathampton, after which you can float the nine miles of canal.
