ResLife
My Experience as a ResLife Assistant
Hello! I`m Latipha, one of the ResLife assistants at Coventry University with FutureLets. I am a Law Student that lived in Bishop Gate in my first year and then I lived in Godiva Place in my second year, so I know all about living in halls. During my first year, I found out about ResLife and I joined events such as cooking classes and Reslife provided the opportunity for me to go to Liverpool for the first time. Since experiencing how good Reslife is from a student's perspective in July 2022 I decided to apply for a job at ResLife and I am happy that I did. I have been a ResLife assistant since September 2022 and it has been amazing!
Benefits of working with Reslife
This is one of the best jobs I have had, and I would highly recommend it to any student. You may think you don’t have time to have a part-time job during your studies and are unsure how you will work around your university schedule. Well, I’m here to tell you that you don’t need to worry about that because while working for ResLife you let your line manager know your availability for work which makes it easier for you to work while focusing on your studies. The majority of shifts are from 1hr – 6hrs but this depends on your availability.
So, what does a ResLife assistant do?
Our role is to assist residents while they settle in their FutureLets accommodation, being someone students can turn to if they need support or if they just want a chat. We host events at Godiva Place, The Cycle Works, and Bishop Gate pretty much every day during term time. We have a variety of events such as cooking, baking, arts and crafts, sports socials, health well-being drop-ins, movie nights, cultural celebrations, and day trips. There’s something for everyone!
Skills I’ve developed.
During my time as a ResLife assistant, I have gained a lot of different skills. I gained more confidence along with a different outlook on life by talking to different people every day, and by listening to and understanding other perspectives. I have gained a variety of digital skills such as blog writing, making TikTok’s, and editing them.
From my experience the best part of being an RLA is personal growth, you will be put in situations that you need to deal with. Sometimes you may not know the answer but you will learn and grow from it. You will be supervising students which will improve your confidence and you will be able to relate to students which makes the job that much better.
Overall, being an RLA has made me aware of my capabilities. Before doing this job i used to put myself in box and I was a bit shy. I also told myself that I was too introvert and maybe couldn`t do this job. Now that I have gained confidence and improve my customer service skills i feel like I can do anything now. Always remember "Life begins at the end of your comfort zone".
