Guide to a successful morning routine

By ResidenceLifeAssistant 22 Sep 2023

Hey there, it's Kristy :)

A good morning routine really sets the tone for the rest of the day, especially when I am going to have a long day ahead. As steps into the third week of this semester, here are some tips I would like to share with you to build a wholesome morning routine filled with mindfullness.

Journaling

When we first wake up, our minds may be filled with ideas and sometimes it can be overwhelming (maybe it's just me). Apart from expressing gratitude which what most of the people do whilst journaling, this can also involves noting down the thoughts that you're expriencing at that moment.

Here are some prompts that you can use:

How is your body feeling right now ?

What can I do this morning to make myself feel better?

If there are any negative thoughts, note them down.

It may be difficult to start at first, but when you start to do it more often you will slowly build self-awareness which is really beneficial towards regulating your emotions.

Meditation

You don't need a yoga mat and a singing bowl to meditate. Don't get fouled by what you see online. Meditation is all about connecting to your mind and body by paying attention to the sensations you're experiencing at that particular moment. You can choose to sit straight up or even lay on your bed flat on your back.

Saying positive affirmations

This is one of the habits that I do on a daily basis. It may sounds cliche but it does works! By repeating positive phrases to yourself, you're ingraining positivity into your mind. The effect of it may not be very apperent at first, but as time passes by, you'll find yourself fighting off negativity around you.

Have a nutritious breakfast

If you're a breakfast person, this is for you. As a dietetics student, I can't stress enough how important it is to adapt a well-balanced diet. There're an exhaustive list of evidence that shows the link between healthy diet and better wellbeing. Try to incorporate good protein, fats and carbs into your breakfast. I love a bowl of oats with blueberries and a boiled egg in the morning. Not only does oats is beneficial towards managing your blood cholesterol, it has loads of fibre in it too.

I hope you have a brilliant day ahead. Take care x
