The First Earth Day in April 1970 was because there was no EPA, no Clean Air Act, and no Clean Water Act. There were no legal or regulatory mechanisms to protect our environment. In the spring of 1970, Senator Gaylord Nelson created Earth Day as a way to force this issue onto the national agenda.

Why was April 22nd Chosen for Earth Day?

At the first Earth Day in 1970, an estimated 20 million Americans participated. They took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate a healthy environment and to participate in teach-ins.
