Chinese Language Day

On April 20th, we commemorate Chinese Language Day, which has been proclaimed by UNESCO. This is an excellent time to explore the richness of Mandarin and appreciate its global relevance.

The Origin 

Chinese Language Day was established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to celebrate linguistic diversity and promote multilingualism. April 20th was chosen to coincide with the date when Cangjie, a legendary figure in ancient China, is said to have created Chinese characters. The day serves as a reminder of the importance of Chinese language and culture in the world.

Understanding the complexity

Mandarin Chinese, generally known as Mandarin, is the world's most widely spoken language, with more than a billion native speakers. Its significance goes far beyond China's boundaries, affecting Chinese populations all over the world and playing an important role in international industry, trade, and diplomacy.

One of the most distinguishing elements of Mandarin is its writing system, which is character-based rather than alphabetic. These characters are not only visually appealing, but also have deep cultural and historical significance.
