Why does Karaoke exist?

The full musical history of Karaoke

Ever belted out Bohemian Rhapsody in front of your friends like you were Freddie Mercury reincarnated? Or maybe you’ve mumbled your way through Wonderwall with unwavering confidence and zero pitch? Congratulations – you’ve taken part in one of the world’s most joyful traditions: karaoke! But have you ever wondered where this delightful mix of music, public embarrassment, and pure serotonin came from? Let’s rewind the track and find out.

Where it all began...

The word "karaoke" is a blend of two Japanese words: kara (empty) and okesutora (orchestra). Yep, "empty orchestra" – which honestly sounds like the name of a very dramatic indie band. The story goes that in the 1970s, a Japanese musician named Daisuke Inoue came up with the idea when he provided background tracks for people to sing along to. He basically invented a way to make everyone feel like a pop star...without actually needing to be able to sing.
Funny thing? He never patented his invention. Which means while he gave the world karaoke, he didn’t make a fortune from it – but he was awarded the Ig Nobel Peace Prize for “providing an entirely new way for people to learn to tolerate each other.”

The global takeover

From smoky Japanese bars to neon-lit lounges across the globe, karaoke caught on like wildfire. By the 1980s and 90s, karaoke machines had infiltrated the West. And now? You can do karaoke from your phone, your TV, or in front of strangers who definitely didn’t ask to hear your rendition of Let It Go.
In the Philippines, karaoke is a national pastime. In Korea, noraebangs (literally "singing rooms") are where magic – and usually a lot of K-pop – happens. In America, karaoke bars are often the setting for bachelorette parties and Friday night chaos. And here in the UK? Well, let’s just say if you’ve never ended a night out with a tone-deaf group singalong to Mr. Brightside, are you even British?

Why do we love it so much?

Karaoke isn’t about having the best voice – it’s about confidence, community, and catharsis. It’s shouting the lyrics when you don’t know them. It’s getting your mates to back you up on No Scrubs. It’s that one person who always does Adele like it’s the Grammys.
In short, karaoke is chaos – and that’s what makes it beautiful.
