The Power of Words

Many have fallen by the edge of the sword but not as many by the tongue. ~ Sirach 28:18

In a world when negativity dominates the media, it's refreshing to have a day dedicated to compassion and happiness. National Say Something Nice Day, observed on June 1st, provides an excellent opportunity to express joy with simple, sincere remarks. This day urges us to go above and beyond to make someone's day better, and thus our own.

Origin of this day

National Say Something Nice Day was founded in Charleston, South Carolina, as part of a larger campaign to combat the negativity and criticism that pervades daily interactions. It was inspired by Mitch Carnell, a communication specialist and author who believed that positive communication had the potential to substantially change our communities. The goal of this day is to create a culture of kindness in which compliments and nice comments become natural parts of our conversations.

And the tongue is a fire! The tongue represents the world of wrongdoing among the parts of our bodies. It pollutes the entire body and sets fire to the course of human existence  ~ James 3 : 6

From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. ~ James 3 : 10

Words hold enormous power. They may motivate, encourage, and foster a sense of belonging. A pleasant comment can significantly improve someone's day, improving their attitude and confidence.

So, too, the tongue is a small part of the body, yet it has great pretensions. Think how small a flame sets a huge forest ablaze. ~ James 3: 5

Celebrating this day requires no excessive gestures. Small acts of kindness can make a significant effect.

Here are a few easy ways to participate:

1. Compliment someone

Take a moment to really compliment someone. It could be regarding their job, looks, or personality. Make it specific and heartfelt.

2. Express gratitude

Thank someone who has impacted your life. Whether it's a mentor, a friend, or a family member, expressing thanks can strengthen your bond and make them feel appreciated.

3. Spread positivity online

In the age of social media, a kind comment or a favourable post can uplift the online community. Send an encouraging remark, commend someone's accomplishments, or tell a nice tale.

4. Write a note

Write a note or letter to someone who could need some encouragement. A handwritten note can be quite important and kept for a long time.

5. Encourage others to join in

Encourage your friends, family, and colleagues to join you in honouring National Say Something Nice Day. Spread the word about the day's mission and start a positive chain reaction.

National Say Something Nice. Day is more than simply another day on the calendar; it serves as a reminder of the power of positive words. By taking the time to say something nice, we help to create a nicer, more supportive world. So, on June 1st, let us make an effort to share love and positivity. A few good words can make a great impact; let us use them generously.

Do not be called double-tongued and do not lay traps with your tongue; for shame comes to the thief, and severe condemnation to the double-tongued. ~ Sirach 5 : 14
