What is the history behind bonfire night?

Bonfire Night, or Guy Fawkes Night, dates back to November 5, 1605, when a group of Catholic conspirators, including Guy Fawkes, attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London. Their goal was to assassinate King James I and replace him with a Catholic ruler. However, the "Gunpowder Plot" was foiled when authorities discovered Fawkes guarding explosives beneath Parliament. To celebrate the king’s survival, people lit bonfires across London, sparking an annual tradition. Over time, Bonfire Night evolved into a celebration marked by fireworks, and bonfires, keeping the historical event alive in British culture.
