Events around Coventry celebrating Black History Month

Black History Month is an annual celebration in October in the UK and also takes place in countries such as the USA and Germany. It is dedicated to honouring the contributions, achievements, and history of Black individuals and communities. It was created to raise awareness about the historical struggles and injustices faced by Black people, as well as to celebrate their culture and accomplishments.

In this Blog we will be discussing about what black history month is, this year's themes and figures and then letting you know about some events in and around Coventry.

Each year has a theme that focuses on specific aspects of Black history, and various events, educational programs, and discussions take place to discuss important figures, events, and movements. It is where people educate, appreciate and look at the heritage and ongoing contributions of Black individuals in society. 

For Black History Month 2024, the theme is Black Resistance, which focuses on the various ways Black individuals and communities have resisted oppression and fought for justice throughout history. This theme highlights resilience, activism, and the ongoing struggle for civil rights.

Some important Key figures that are really important in black history and important to celebrate during black history month are:

Martin Luther King Jr. – A key figure, having done many motivational speeches and important for his role played in non-violent protests and many movements for equal rights in the USA.

Harriet Tubman - Known for her bravery in leading enslaved people to freedom via the Underground Railroad.

Rosa Parks - Recognised for her refusing to give up her seat in the Montgomery bus boy cott, which made huge influences against segregation.

To celebrate Black History Month Coventry will be hosting events in and around the city.

The first events are held at the student's union so are easily accessible and free for students.

The first event is the Black history month student's union takeover. This is taking place Friday 18th October at 11am-1pm at the welcome desk are at the hub. It will be a great opportunity to find more about Black History Month and take part in some quizzes where you can get some freebies.

The next event is a black history month screening at the students union. This will take place on Friday October 25th at 6pm at George Elliot ground floor room 32. There will be shown a popular recent movie that also shoes the challenges black people have faced. You can reserve a space on the students union website. 

The next event is at St Marys Guidehall on Saturday 26th October from 7pm-9pm. They will be having an evening of music, storytelling and also entertainment. 

This event is at Warwick Arts centre and is a comedy event. There will be m,and famous comedians and the night will show a range of talents to celebrate black history month. 

Finally the blue coat theatre is doing a performave with music, dance, drama and poetry  to honour the past and focus on resilience.
