Hello my smiley friends!
University life is exciting and all, until assignment/exam season comes. That’s when it becomes overwhelming - between deadlines, lectures, and the occasional existential crisis (yes, we’ve all been there, you’re not the only one), it’s easy to feel drained. Today, I’m here to tell you some interesting ways to lift your spirits when things get tough.
1. Laughing therapy
Ever tried laughing for no reason? You might think "No? I’m not a maniac", but laughter therapy is a real thing. Even if it starts off fake, laughing triggers endorphins, the body’s feel-good hormones - if you don’t trust me, google it! You’ll find loads of articles on it.
Try watching a stand-up show, joining a laughter yoga session (yes, this is also real), or just giggling with your friends for no reason. You’ll be surprised how much better you feel.
2. Dressing for no reason
This is something I actually do! Who says you need a special occasion to dress up? Even if you have nowhere to go, put on a killer outfit or wear a bold colour! This can shift your mindset and boost confidence. A good outfit can make you feel ready to take on the world - even if you’re just heading to the library.
3. Random acts of kindness
Sometimes, the best way to feel better is to help someone else. Compliment a stranger - y’know, sometimes the reaction they give you back just puts a smile on your face too! Leave a kind note for a friend, or give them a small gift. Whether it’s a pebble on the street, or something big - they’ll appreciate it and just make you happy too (at least that’s how it is for me).
4. Scream
Ever feel so stressed you just wanna scream? Go for it! Find a safe space - your room, a remote park, or (and probably best option) your pillow - and let it out. Expressing frustration this way can be strangely cathartic and helps release built-up tension. Just make sure no one mistakes it for a crime...
5. Talk to yourself
Do you talk to yourself or am I the only one? Either way, instead of letting it be your worst critic, turn it into your biggest hype squad. Stand in front of the mirror and give yourself a pep talk like you’re in a movie. My teacher used to encourage us to do this, as he believed a positive mindset can also manifest it.
6. Dance like a maniac
Speaking of dancing, nothing lifts the mood faster than throwing yourself into a full-body, ridiculous dance session. No choreography, no expectations, no nothing - just pure, unfiltered movement. Put on your favorite song and let loose!
University can be tough, I know, but that doesn’t mean your mental well-being has to take a bullet. Sometimes, the most unexpected things can have the biggest impact on your mood. So next time you’re feeling low, try one of these quirky techniques and see what works for you!
