Share the celebrations with flatmates and friends

Lunar New Year celebrates community, good food and new beginnings. It's a holiday that's celebrated in many different places, by many different people, each with their own traditions and events. Here are some ways you and your friends can celebrate in halls.

1. Cook a meal together🍜

Many traditional dishes like whole fish, dumplings and noodles are symbols of good wealth and fortune. Cooking is a great way for you and your flatmates to bond, especially by sharing different cultures. Here is a tasty noodle recipe for you to try!

2. Exchange red envelopes

Red envelopes are a gift symbolising good luck, so why not write your friends and flatmates notes to wish them luck and happiness in the new year?

3. Decorate your kitchen or living room

Have a crafts session together and get creative by making lanterns or firecracker tubes. It's a great activity to do with friends and a good way to escape after a long week at uni.

4. Have a games night🀄

Many traditional games are played during the Lunar New Year, and it could be quite fun to get a bit competitive with your flatmates and friends.

  • Mahjong: A classic tile-based game that's great for testing your wits.
  • Chinese Poker/Cards: If you've got a deck of cards, try learning Chinese Poker. It's frequently played on New Year's Eve to pass the time.
  • Chopstick Passing Game: This one could be quite a laugh for your mates. It's a race to move items like peanuts or sweets from one bowl to another using only chopsticks.
