Ramadan is a significant time for many Muslim students. It can also be a challenging month, requiring immense dedication and motivation, but there are things you can do to help your flatmates or fellow students who are fasting.
What is Ramadan?
Ramadan is the ninth month of Hijri (Lunar calendar), and during this time Muslims will pray, fast and reflect. They fast during the day, which means they don't eat or drink between the hours of dawn and dusk. Their hours may differ depending on the sunrise and sunset times, and as the month progresses, sunrise will get earlier, and sunset will get later, making the fasting day slightly longer towards the end of the month. Ramadan lasts one month (17th Feb-18th/19th Mar), so it's important to be mindful during this time and show support and understanding whilst they balance their studies, sleep and spiritual goals.
Check in
It's important to ask them how they're doing and how they're finding Ramadan. As you can imagine, their energy will drop, and that could impact their productivity levels. Offer to help them with practical tasks like cleaning the kitchen or taking the bins out. Small gestures like this could be exactly what they need right now.
Be flexible
If you're organising social activities, does it have to be lunch or coffee? You could plan to go to the movies or have a board game night. Fasting will change their entire body clock, so it's important to be considerate of their new hours. They will appreciate the extra effort!
Just ask!
Everyone experiences Ramadan differently, so don't be afraid to ask your flatmates what they need. Some students may want to stay busy to keep their minds off hunger, but some may need more downtime. There isn't a universal guide you can follow.
Don't be afraid to learn
Muslims welcome questions and value your interest in being open to learn about their religion and culture. Taking an interest in Ramadan could also be your way of showing support. It's not awkward to ask about the significance of the month or how they're feeling.
