I started with enthusiasm and a passion for building community within student living and tried making it as comfortable for them as possible. As a Reslife assistant, I have had loads of fun and made countless unforgettable memories.
From day one, the goal is to support and enhance the student living experience. Whether it is with helping set up epic events, responding to residence enquires, or just being a friendly face in the hallway, the main focus is always to foster a sense of belonging and community among residents.
One of the most exciting aspects of this job is doing fun and crafty events that cater to everyone’s tastes and interests. From themed parties to cosy movie nights as well as quiz competitions, and craft Wednesdays, there was never a dull moment. As a Reslife assistant, my goal is to make sure everyone feels included and engaged, fostering a deeper connection. This really helped me develop my communication skills.
As the months went by, I realised that being a Residence Life Assistant wasn't just about helping throw great events (though that was definitely a perk). It was about honing essential skills like communication, time management, resilience, and leadership. Whether it was coordinating with fellow assistants, liaising with other university departments, or responding swiftly to emergencies, every shift was a masterclass in personal and professional development.
The heart and soul of Res-Life revolved around building relationships—both with fellow assistants and the diverse array of residents. From deep chats during events and bonding moments with students while making cakes or playing board games, each interaction added a new layer to the vibrant tapestry of community life. It was in these moments of connection that the true fun of Res-Life unfolded.
Of course, no journey is without its challenges. From navigating emergencies with poise and professionalism to balancing the demands of academic commitments, there were moments when the pressure can be overwhelming. But it was in these moments of adversity I was reminded of the incredible support within the Res-Life family. I felt heard and understood by the senior team and it felt like a family.
As my time as a Residence Life Assistant draws to a close, I can reflect on the impact of our collective efforts in this team. By empowering residents and being there through their tough times to run enjoyable events and fostering a culture of inclusivity. I believe we created a difference in residents' student life and made it more fun and exciting. The spirit of all Res-Life members will continue to thrive, carried forward by passionate assistants for new students coming in each year.
Working as a Residence Life Assistant was a lot of fun as it was a transformative journey filled with new skills, laughter, and new friends. Working together on unforgettable events and fostering deep connections within the community, every moment was a testament to the power of teamwork, resilience, and the unwavering spirit of camaraderie. I am grateful for the friendships I have made with the students and the other Reslife members. It is an experience that I would highly recommend!
