How to food shop smarter.

Improve and manage your spending habits!

As a university student, balancing a budget while ensuring you eat well can be pretty tough. But luckily, with a few simple tips, you can save money on your food shopping without sacrificing nutrition or taste. Here’s how to shop smarter and make your money go further!

Plan your meals in advance.

One of the easiest ways to cut costs is by meal planning. Before heading to the store, decide what meals you’ll be making for the week or next few days. This helps you avoid buying unnecessary items, reduce food waste, and stick to a set budget.
Write down a shopping list based on your meal plan and take it with you. If it’s not on the list, you probably don’t need it! (I've also linked a handy video that goes more in-depth and gives some helpful tips and tricks!)

Buy in bulk, but wisely!

Certain staples like rice, pasta, lentils, and canned goods are cheaper when bought in bulk. If you have the storage space, consider splitting large purchases with housemates to save even more. Prioritise doing this with food that doesn't spoil easy!

Freezing and prepping

Freezing food is a great way to extend shelf life and prevent waste. You can batch cook meals and freeze portions for later, freeze bread, cheese, and meats to prevent spoilage, and store fresh herbs, fruits, and vegetables in freezer bags for smoothies or soups. You'll thank your past self for providing you with an easy meal when you aren't in the mood to toil over a stove!

Compare prices and look for discounts

Check unit prices rather than overall price to get the best value. I recommend trying supermarket own-brand products, since they’re often just as good as big brands! Also, be on the look out for discounts on items that can be frozen or used later. You can also Sign up for supermarket loyalty cards for extra savings, like Nectar cards or Coop points!

Avoid shopping when hungry..

It sounds simple, but shopping on an empty stomach can lead to unnecessary impulse purchases. Eat before you go to the store to stick to your budget. (but also, it's okay to have a little treat time to time, so take this with a pinch of salt!~)

Reduce waste by using what you have

Before heading out to the shops, double check on what’s already in your fridge and cupboards. Try to use up perishable items first to reduce waste and stretch your budget. This stops you from having too many of one thing too!

Explore local markets and reduced sections

Local markets often have fresh produce at lower prices, and supermarket reduced sections (usually found later in the evenings) can be great for scoring discounted items such as bread, pastries, ready meals, sandwiches, meats, and yoghurt. (I love to do this in Boots and Sainsburys, keep your eyes peeled for yellow labels!)
