University Careers Weeks – Advice
Careers Week is a promotion to help you grow as a person in preparation for your future career. This year, CUSU is hosting a full week of activities, both in-person and online, to help you improve your talents, try new things, and meet new people!
The campaign will run from March 7th through March 11th, 2022, and we'll be hosting a variety of activities. All activities are open to the public and are free to attend.
Advice 1: Find out who will be attending:
Prior to the event, look for—or ask for—a list of all the firms that will be participating, and prioritise the ones you want to approach. If you don't have enough time to meet everyone, you'll at least know you've met your top options. While a career fair is an excellent opportunity to learn about firms, you should familiarise yourself with them before attending. If you already have some background to work with, you'll be able to ask more detailed questions and obtain more information. So, before you go, do some research on each firm on your priority list, and be ready to adapt your interactions to each recruiter individually.
Advice 2: Bring a small bag with notebooks and pens:
To a career fair, what should you bring? Not much - you just want to be able to go across the room quickly and shake hands without having to use your hands. All you need is a tiny bag to contain a notebook a pen when writing information about the company. remember to dress smart casual for the event - you do not have a suit but make sure you dress comfortable and presentable.
Advice 3: Don’t be shy
Be polite, confident, and have something to say as you approach each table. With a grin, eye contact, and a solid handshake, you may introduce yourself. Recruiters frequently take the lead and ask you questions, but you should be prepared to tell the employer what you want them to know about yourself. To make the best use of your time, you should be able to explain why you're interested in the organisation and how your talents or qualifications are a good fit for the job.
Advice 4: Network and Follow up
A professional week is the ideal setting for networking - Following up with an organisation is critical if you want to get the most out of visiting career fairs. Following companies on LinkedIn is beneficial as social media becomes more significant for recruiting. You may learn more about the firm, as well as the latest news and employment openings, by visiting this page.
