Using air fryers in halls

Appliances can cause safety risks if used incorrectly

The air fryer is the MVP of the kitchen at the moment. It’s fast, it makes everything crispy, and it saves you a fortune on energy bills and takeaways.

However, because they heat up so quickly and reach high temperatures, they can become a major fire risk if they aren't looked after. To keep you, your flatmates, and the building safe, here is a guide to air fryer etiquette in halls.

1. The 'kitchen only' rule

This is the most important rule: Air fryers must only be used in kitchen areas.

Never, under any circumstances, should you store or use an air fryer in your bedroom. Bedrooms aren't designed for cooking appliances; using one there is a massive fire risk and a breach of your accommodation regulations. Keep the cooking in the kitchen!

2. Give it some breathing room

Did you know that air fryers vent a lot of heat from the back?

  • Pull it away from the wall: When in use, make sure the air fryer is pulled forward and has plenty of space around it.
  • If it’s pushed right against the wall or tucked under a low cupboard, the heat can’t escape, which can damage the walls or even start a fire.

3. Don't set it and forget it

Air fryers cook fast, which means things can burn fast too:

  • Stay in the room: Never leave your air fryer unattended.
  • Use a timer: If you’re prone to getting distracted by your phone or a flatmate, set a loud timer so you remember to check your food. If you absolutely have to step away, ask a flatmate to keep an eye on it for you.

4. Remember to unplug

When you’re done eating, don’t just walk away.

  • Switch off and unplug: Once your food is out, switch the socket off and pull the plug out. This ensures the appliance can’t accidentally stay on or overheat.
  • UK 3-Pin Plugs Only: Your air fryer must have a standard UK three-pin plug. Travel adapters and two-pin plugs are strictly banned as they are known to overheat and cause electrical fires.

5. Keep it clean, including the coils!

A greasy air fryer is a fire hazard. Built-up fat can smoke and eventually ignite.

  • The basket: Ideally, give the basket a quick soak in hot soapy water after every use.
  • The coils: Once the unit is completely cool and unplugged, check the heating coils above the basket. Wipe away any grease splashes with a damp cloth. This is where most "hidden" fires start!
