Recycling right in halls

It's easy to make a difference

As part of our commitment to achieving net-zero carbon goals, Coventry University is encouraging all students, especially those living in halls, to do their part by recycling. It's easy, effective, and essential for reducing waste and conserving resources. Here's a simple guide to help you understand what goes where, ensuring your recycling efforts count!

What goes in the mixed recycling bin?

This is the bin for cardboard, cans, and plastic – the usual suspects! When you're recycling in this bin, be sure to include:

  • Cardboard (like pizza boxes)
  • Cans and tins
  • Paper (newspapers, brochures)
  • Magazines
  • Plastic bottles
  • Plastic trays

Tip: Ensure items are clean and dry before recycling to avoid contamination.

What goes in the food waste bin?

Food waste is biodegradable, which is why it needs a separate bin. This one’s for all your kitchen scraps! You can recycle the following:

  • Vegetable and fruit peels
  • Bones
  • Unwanted food
  • Oils
  • Plate scrapings
  • Teabags or coffee grounds

Reminder: Composting helps reduce landfill waste, so don’t throw these items in the general bin!

What goes in the glass recycling bin?

Glass bottles and jars are fully recyclable, so use the glass bin for:

  • Glass jars
  • Glass bottles

Note: Rinse out containers to avoid contamination and smell.

What goes in the general waste bin?

This is for the stuff you just can’t recycle. Unfortunately, some items don’t have a second life through recycling. This includes:

  • Napkins
  • Plastic film
  • Crisp packets
  • Plastic bags
  • Bubblewrap

Important: Always try to recycle, but if it can't go in any of the other bins, this is the place.

Why is recycling important?

Recycling helps conserve resources, reduces waste in landfills, and supports sustainable practices. By following these simple rules, you’re contributing to Coventry University’s goal of achieving a net-zero carbon footprint.

How can you help?

  • Sort your waste correctly: Follow the guidelines above and make sure to separate your recycling.
  • Encourage your housemates: Make recycling easy for everyone in your hall by sharing the rules.
  • Keep it clean: Clean and dry items will ensure they’re fully recyclable!

Together, we can make a big difference in reducing waste and conserving resources. Let's make recycling a habit!
