Starting university is exciting, but with independence also comes responsibility. One of the most important things you can do for yourself is to stay safe.
As a founding member of ProtectED, Coventry University is committed to your security and wellbeing so you can live your best student life.
From enjoying nights out to commuting to and from halls, here are some tips on keeping safe that you should know.
- Always stay alert when walking alone.
- Try to avoid using your mobile phone or headphones when walking alone – it can impact the senses that alert you to danger.
- Plan your route in advance.
- Never leave personal items unattended in public spaces.
- Stay alert at cash machines and always hide your PIN.
- Mark your valuables using ultraviolet pens to write your name and ID number – these are available from the Coventry University Protection Services.
- If you suspect you're being followed, cross the road or enter a nearby shop and stay there until you are sure you are safe.
- If you see any suspicious activity, please contact campus security on 024 7765 5555.
- Always eat before you head out to drink.
- While you are out, alternate between alcohol and soft drinks.
- Try and minimise mixing different types of alcohol.
- Know your limits and stick to them.
- Drink a glass of water when you get home and as soon as you get up the morning after.
Coventry University strongly discourages the use of illegal drugs and substances. The possession of illegal drugs is a criminal offence. If you are found using or possessing illegal drugs on university premises, the university will inform the police.
Coventry University Protection Services
The Coventry University Protection Services look after all individuals who find themselves on campus from students and staff to members of the public. Look out for them in their vests and patches if you need help.
- Available 24/7, 365 days a year

Ask the team questions at their weekly Safety Roadshow (usually on a Tuesday or Thursday) where they give updates on what they're doing to help keep everyone safe. Here you can also get UV marker pens, personal attack alarms and burglar alarm units.
