Saving on groceries

A student’s guide to the cheapest stores in Coventry

As a student, budgeting is tough, especially if you are juggling rent, food expenses, social life (because we all need a break, right?), and everything in between. Whether you’re living off a part-time job or relying on student loans, finding the best deals on groceries can make a huge difference in your budget. Thankfully, Coventry has plenty options that won’t leave your wallet crying. Here are some of the best places to shop when you’re living on a budget, along with some tips.

Aldi & Lidl

No student budget guide would be complete without mentioning Aldi and Lidl. It’s honestly so cheap, and the quality of their own brand stuff is on par with some of the famous brands. In my humble opinion, they’re pretty similar in terms of cost, but Lidl has a secret weapon: the app Lidl plus, which gives you extra deals and discounts every week. And let’s not forget Lidl’s bakery, just thinking about it makes me smile – you can get fresh bread and pastries for, like, pennies.

Both supermarkets are convenient and cheap for picking up essentials like pasta, rice, veggies and fruits. Plus, both feature random buys that change every week, ranging from kitchen gadgets to gym equipment.

Sainsbury’s

Okay, so Sainsbury’s might not be as cheap as Lidl or Aldi but hear me out – if you don’t feel like walking a distance and just want to grab something quick, Sainsbury’s is perfect! While they might be pricier, their basics range is fairly reasonable prices.

And don’t forget the Nectar card – you can either get discounts or Nectar points and save for future shops. They also offer Meal Deals if you’re too busy to cook (or just lazy...) for affordable prices.

Poundland

Need snacks? Cleaning supplies? Random stuff? Poundland has you covered!

While not everything is £1 these days, it’s still one of the cheapest places to pick up essentials. It’s a go-to when you want to stock up on household stuff, or when you just want a snack stash.

Home Bargains

Home bargains is like a treasure hunt – you never know what you’ll find but it’s always a good deal. They offer everything from groceries to home essentials, and their snack selection is top-tier – seriously, 10/10.

I often find branded products here that are cheaper than at other supermarkets. It’s one of those places you can’t leave empty-handed.

Coventry Market

If you love cooking Asian food or need specific ingredients, hit up Coventry Market. It’s in the city centre, and you can find so much here – kitchen supplies, fresh ingredients, spices, speciality Asian ingredients, … you name it! They are much cheaper than supermarkets.

For Chinese ingredients especially, Coventry Market is a gem. I’ve found things here for way less than what you’d pay at a Chinese market or other stores in the city centre.

Main money-saving tips:

  • Use loyalty cards: If possible, get cards like Nectar/Lidl Plus for discounts and offers. Shop in the evening: Many stores reduce prices on items in the evenings like bread, ready meals, or meat. For example, Lidl’s bakery has a discount on all baked stuff after 7 PM.
  • PLAN: Make a list before you shop and STICK TO IT – trust me, this stops you from overspending on things you don’t need (talking from experience).
  • Look for own-brand products: These are (in my opinion) as good as branded stuff and cost much cheaper.
  • Extra tip: Eggs – if you’re buying eggs, grab the 15-pack of eggs from Lidl or Iceland. It’s the cheapest option for eggs in Coventry.

Shopping on a student budget doesn’t have to mean living off instant noodles and toast. With places like Lidl, Home Bargains, and gems like Coventry Market, you can eat well without breaking the bank. It just takes a bit of planning, but your wallet will be thanking you.
