Things I wish I knew in the first year of uni

Ahhhhhh first year, it's a bit crazy that it was years ago for me now. It's been a good 3 years full of funny super memorable experiences, I’m going to go through a few things I wish I had known back in my first year at Coventry University.

1. It is very easy to get around the UK by coach and it's gonna save you a lot of money.

The Pool Meadow Bus and Coach station is located right next to the university, the massive plus of that is the fact it's within walking distance, so you're never too far away from your next adventure. You’ve got a choice between National Express and Megabus (for times the bank account is looking a bit funny), you’d be surprised how many cities you can visit by coach. This is defo worth checking as an option of transport.

2. A railcard will save you P’s

I’m so happy I found out about these magical cards before I came to university - giving you 30% off the cost of your train tickets, they're defo worth the investment. (Heads up, Santander Bank give you the card free of charge when you open a student account with them, so this may be worth looking into!).

3. The university has tons of open-access computer rooms and study spaces!

These are open computer rooms with PCs that all students can access at any time. When term time gets hectic and all the deadlines start rolling in, this is one of the best alternative ways to find a quieter space to study and get some work done away from any distractions.

At times you will struggle to find a quiet seat to complete your work because everyone is in PANIC MODE during the exam season. Worry not, you can book study rooms/spaces/pods in advance! If you need a quiet space to do work or you require more space for a group project, I would definitely advise you to take advantage of this :)

4. Make the most out of trips away with your course or society

Now, who doesn’t love being able to travel for a cheaper price? Lol, I know I did. I went to Amsterdam with the Nigerian society and it was amazing! They even paid for most of my trip so I only had to pay £50 towards travel and accommodation. Make sure to check out what your course and societies have planned for the year and hop on it asap. Make the most of these opportunities - you’ll make amazing memories.

5. Download UniDays

It's an app full of discount codes and promotions for students. You sign up using your university email, after receiving a verification email you will need to click the link inside to verify your account. Once this is completed you are officially a part of a shopping crazy cult - you will NOT be able to pass on those bargains.
