+ life after freshers!

Freshers has begun! This is a really exciting time for all of the 1st years starting up their time at Coventry University. There is lots going on and so much to do. It can also be overwhelming starting a new course in a new place and a new stage of your life. In this blog we will be discussing how to navigate freshers and those first few weeks of university. We will also be discussing life after freshers and settling into a routine after.

It is the first week of uni. We hope you are enjoying it and settling in okay. There is so many events on for you to attend and so many opportunities to meet people. Freshers is a scary time but if there is any time to step out of your comfort zone, my advice would be to do it now. Say yes to everything you can say yes to and keep yourself busy.

It can be overwhelming not knowing what to go to and how to fit it all in. However, this is a great time to get out there. This is the time at university where you will have the least amount of work to do and the least commitments. This is the perfect time to do it all. I would say try and do some of everything. Ask your flatmates if they want to go for drinks or dinner, go on a night out if that is your thing, go to some of the society first sessions as these are usually free, come to our Reslife events, go for coffee with people from your course and lots more. You never know how you might meet new people and in freshers usually everyone wants to get out there, meet new people and make friends so be sure to reach out to people and start new conversations.

This is a great time to try out a new hobby or pick up a sport by joining a society. They often have free first sessions for the first couple of weeks so that you can try a few and see which you would like. I would recommend trying a couple out even ones you have never even thought about as you never know you might find something you really love.

Coventry sports

If you like nights out then freshers is a great time to try out some of the different clubs and bars in and around Coventry. There are lots of student bars with deals on such as the Phoenix, the Ivy house, Wetherspoons and Quids in. There are also clubs such as Kasbah, Catch 22, HMV empire and lots more. Many of these have lots of themed events on over freshers such as foam parties and back to school parties.

However, freshers is not all about nights out and it is possible to have a great time without going out if you don’t like nights out. There is lots of people who don’t like nights out you won’t be alone. Come along to our Reslife events most of which are free. We have some great things coming up such as glow in the dark volleyball and F1 showings. These are a great way to make friends and meet like-minded people. There is also lots of restaurants and different foods to try. You could also suggest a movie night to your flatmates or do a come dine this me style evening. There are great activity places to go such as tweezers mini golf or you could play axe throwing at boom battle bar. There is lots going on which doesn’t have to include alcohol and a great opportunity to meet people.

We will now be discussing after freshers. After the rush and excitement of freshers it can be difficult to settle in and this is often a time you start to miss home. My advice would be to try and stick it out best you can as it is important you are able to adjust to your new home here in Coventry and create a routine. My advice would be to get a calendar and try and plan and create a routine. Write your lectures in then figure out where you have time for other things. Although it will feel like a lul, try and enjoy some down time as soon you will have lots of coursework and will be wishing you had some spare time! Try and make your room nice and homely, watch your favourite show or movie, get cosy and relax. However, make sure you try and keep in touch with those people you met in the first few weeks. Ask them to go for a drink or some food. There is still lots going on even though it may not seem like as much.

Our Reslife events run all year round and are always there for you to enjoy if you have own time or want to get out of your flat. Also, if you are finding life hard after freshers our Reslife assistants are here to support you and are always up for a chat.

Try and create a routine you are able to get used to, whilst also still attending social events and having a work life balance. You will get used to everything with time and there is always lots going on as well as lots of support should you end up having a hard time.

We hope you have a great Freshers and enjoy it all!
